BANGKOK, March 4 (UPI) -- Thailand intends to promote nuclear energy and clean development, the Bangkok Post reported.
Kurujit Nakornthap, deputy permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry, said nuclear energy could play an integral role in the government's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The plan also includes further development of renewable energy and conservation activities.
Almost 60 percent of greenhouse gases generated in Thailand come from the energy sector, Nakornthap said.
"We are looking for way to generate a large amount of energy without generating a large amount of greenhouse gases. That's nuclear energy," he said.
Former Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand outlined a policy for Thailand to develop nuclear energy as an option to improve long-term electricity supply security. Authorities have begun a feasibility study with a final decision expected in three years on whether to build a nuclear plant.
"This government's policy is clear that we will continue with and complete the study of a nuclear project in every aspect, including legal, economic and its impact on the public," Nakornthap said.
